Linda Hughs Linda works to improve teaching practice, especially in the area of literacy instruction, in schools throughout New York State. Her focus on reading comprehension strategies and the traits of writing helps teachers design standards-based curriculum with authentic assessments that align to the state assessments, lessening the need for test-prep practice materials. The value of student engagement in learning is another area of interest, as is the effect of portfolio development on student learning. In 2001, Ms. Hughs achieved National Board Certification in Early Adolescence/English Language Arts. She is also a certified Fellow of Communities for Learning. Since retiring from full-time teaching in 2002, she works as an independent consultant with schools to improve student performance.
